Magma gigs in Japan 1998
reported by Shigetoshi MIYAMOTO
At last Magma -European musical
monster- comes to Japan! We Japanese fans are waiting for this day for more then 20 years.
In Japan for a long time MDK was the only Japanese released vinyl till the age of CD's. We
must depend on imported disc shops to get infrequent correspondences from France. The luck
of information caused much confusion and misunderstandings.
For example many of Japanese listeners was disappointed when "Merci" came
because they have no previous knowledge about funky era of Magma and were still in
expectation of Magma 70's though at that time Magma stopped their live appearance.
As far as I am concerned I had not known that "Retrospectiw" was Magma 10th
anniversary till early 90's.
Slowly the situation has been improved for these 10 years. Most of Magma official CD's are
issued in Japan and a few magazines enthusiastically featured Magma to unveil the myth and
legend of them.
And finally we are in the presence of them!
Magma formation in Japan were
Christian Vander
Stella Vander
Isabelle Feuillebois
Philippe Bussonet
Bertrand Cardiet
Emmanuel Borghi
James McGaw
2, July (2nd night at Tokyo)
I reached On Air East, Shibuya at 5 pm. Then few people
were there. I was waiting at the door. Time passed and many Magma freaks came together.
Some were wearing official Magma T shirts or necklaces. There was a girl who had in her
hand a paper on which MDK lyrics are printed. Most of them knew which tunes Magma would
play. Too hot! It's nearly 6 pm and the temperature was over 30 degrees centigrade. Sweat
ran down my face. Sometimes rehearsal sound were heard. "It's De Futura!""
Now Kohntarkosz!"
Among the fans I saw some Japanese musicians' face.
Yoshihisa SHIMIZ (Kenso), Osam SAKAMOTO (Soft Weed Factor), etc. Later I heard Takeshi
YASMOTO (Mongol), Kenji ITO (Harpy) were also there. I looked around wondering if there
were Tatsuya YOSHIDA (Ruins), too, but he was not. I also heard afterwards that he was
ironically not in Japan due to his tour abroad. (Once he planned to invite Magma to Japan
for himself in vain as it was too costly.)
The door opened at 6:30 pm and I hardly missed the chair
(about 300 chairs were set in the hall). Finally over 600 people were in the hall (of
course the house was filled almost over its capacity).
In the hall some Magma or Offering tunes, "Otis"
"Nono""Weidorje" etc., were played from speakers around. At the door
many CD's and official goods were exhibited for sale. All of them sold well and especially
the MDK score book had been sold out. Someone said joking "With it I could play and
sing MDK here and now!"
The lights got down and the live started at 7:10 pm.
They played
Kobaia
De Futura
Hhai
Kohntarkosz
MDK
Christian's face were almost hidden behind the cymbals but
his energy seemed to overwhelm us and even the other musicians. It was true that he plays
with no compromise at any time. Bertrand's a good singer and walked around the stage with
showy actions to agitate us, which reminded me of Mike Love with the Beach Boys. Between
"Kobaia" and "De Futura" Bertrand made a brief greeting in Japanese
language."Konbanwa(Good Evening), Hajimete Omeni Kakarimas (This is the first time to
see you)"
The audiences were enthusiastic. They knew the songs very well. They (and I) shook their
body to the songs. Especially when MDK was played all of us stood up and push up our fists
to Bertrand's action.
All the songs were splendid. Violent overdrive in "De Futura, Christian's hearty
vocal on "Hhai, Improvisational duo by Christian and Stella (the nice result of
Offering experience) in the middle part of MDK, ....
But among them Kohntarkosz was the greatest!! At the song's climax I got goose-flesh all
over and almost sang with them. It was a wonderful play!!
At the end of the show Stella said in English, "This is the first time we come to
Japan, but I hope we'll come back soon!"
On the way back I was singing "I must return" unconsciously. My mind had been perfectly invaded by aliens from Kobaia.
3 July (one night at Nagoya)
I left Tokyo at 2 pm and reached Nagoya at 4 pm, traveled by Shin Kansen express. It was the hottest day of the year. I heard the peak temperature there was near 36 degrees centigrade!!
Nagoya is the 3rd largest city in Japan and good place to enjoy live stage because not too many audiences rush upon the concerts. About 200 Magma freaks came together at Club Quattro. I could get a very good position, 2nd line from the stage and right in front of Christian. I happened to know one of the Magma freaks in Nagoya. He knew Magma well, too and we hit it off with each other talking about Magma music.
We sat waiting the live start. The live must start at 7 pm
but at 7:30 Magma was not on the stage. The announcement was made that one of the members
suddenly got into bad health condition and he went to hospital. It caused a stir among us.
Nevertheless the live began 10 minutes later.
When Christian sat at the drum set someone in the audience shouted "Zebehn Strain de
Geustaah!". Christian smiled awkwardly.
"Kobaia" started but Emmanuel was not on the stage. He appeared slightly delayed
so everyone there believed he was the one. But he was not! Later I got to know the fact
was only that the guitarist James went out and did not come back in time.
I could feel the higher tensional vibration that night.
Magma was so close to me that the music almost directly reached my ears.(not through PA)
At the final of "De Futura" and "MDK" Christian drummed almost
recklessly and the rest of the band barely caught up with him. I sang with Magma. (15
years ago I could sing whole "MDK" from memory.)
I fully enjoyed these songs, but unfortunately this hardness damaged the aesthetic
delicacy of "Kohntarkosz" I felt.
At the end of the concert I shook hands with Christian and
Bertrand. I said "Merci beaucoup!" and Christian smiled at me. His hand was big
but soft and warm.
I was sure that this excitement would last for the time being.

When I heard for the first time that Magma revived in 1996 and that played songs from 70's, I wondered if it had any meanings. Now I understand that these songs were indeed of 70's but not old at all. Magma music always makes a fresh start with the energy which Christian's songs have beyond the times and fashions.
I hear Magma now plays Theusz Hamtaahk trilogy on stage. I hope, as Stella said, they will come to Japan again and let us hear the Thesusz Hamtaahk '99.
