Chikara-mochi has been loved by travelers crossing the Usui Pass for over 250 years.
Traditionally handmade method
In the 2nd year of the Ansei era, 95 young samurai from the Annaka domain were divided into 16 groups and had a competition to go on an excursion along the Nakasendo road, which spanned over 7 ri and 7 towns, from Annaka Castle Otemae to Usui Pass and Kumano Gongen-sama (present-day Ansei). Chikara-mochi (Chikara-mochi) is a sweet that was praised by young samurai during the excursion (marathon), and is said to be the source of physical strength. With its ancient history, the taste of its hometown, created by handmade methods, continues to be preserved to this day.
